Golf socks: lengths, club rules and blisters

Today's socks and club rules

Golf socks range from no-show to knee-high. Club rules vary: some ask for crew or knee-high socks with shorts, and a few request tailored shorts. Cushioned, moisture-wicking pairs help prevent blisters on long walks.

What it solved on the course

Socks help keep feet dry over a full round of walking. They also answer the club's dress code, which can dictate height, color, and logos when you wear shorts.

History

On hot days, shorts were permitted on course only if worn with knee-high socks, according to Golf Monthly. Some old-school private clubs still take dress codes seriously, and that includes socks. One writer at Pro Golf Now says his club does not allow short socks, specifically no ankle socks; you must wear crew socks. Guests from rival clubs sometimes show up in knee-high socks, and long socks must be tasteful, with solid colors or light striping. The rule does not apply to women. Things have loosened. Shorts are now allowed at nearly every course, and the long sock rule has mostly disappeared. Some venues may still request tailored shorts. American Golf notes that some clubs traditionally insisted on knee-length socks with shorts, though that trend is dying out. Glenmuir says almost any sock type is acceptable now, just don't show too much or tuck trousers into them. With shorts, Glenmuir suggests white socks below the ankle, with rare exceptions for knee-length. Go With Socks points to Mark Wahlberg, who was stopped at Elanora Country Club in Sydney and asked to change his socks.

How to use it now

  1. With shorts, start with ankle or no-show socks in warm weather. They keep the line clean and match the casual look most public courses allow.
  2. If your club is strict, pack white crew socks. Solid colors are safest, and light striping is usually fine.
  3. For a long walking round, choose a cushioned sole and a moisture-wicking fabric. Cotton blends work, but synthetics dry faster.
  4. Match sock color to your shoes when in doubt. Dark shoes look better with darker socks; white shoes take white or light socks.
  5. Knee-highs are still required at a few clubs with shorts. Wear them plain and pulled up, not slouched.
